> Disclosure: We build Sonar (trysonar.app), so weigh this accordingly. This guide is not a ranking. Each tool gets the job it does best — including the jobs where a competitor beats Sonar — and every price below was checked on the vendor's own pricing page on October 19, 2026. No affiliate links, no paid placements.
What are the best tools for ASO in 2026?
There is no single best ASO tool. The right one depends on the job you need done first, and then on budget. Here are our picks:
- Best for market intelligence and download/revenue estimates: Sensor Tower. Industry-standard estimates and ad intelligence, sold through custom quotes only.
- Best for keyword research depth on a team budget: AppTweak. From $79/month billed annually ($99 month-to-month), with market intelligence, Apple Ads tools and AI agents around it.
- Best for app analytics plus ASO in one dashboard: Appfigures. Free plan; keyword tracking from $44.99/month, the 500-keyword ASO plan at $149.99/month.
- Best for review management: AppFollow. Free plan, an ASO plan at $19/month, Slack and Zendesk routing.
- Best for editing and publishing listings to both stores: App Radar. From €69/month, with a listing editor that pushes changes live.
- Best for iOS-only indies on a Mac: Astro. $108/year for unlimited keywords in a native Mac app.
- Best for AI-agent and API workflows across both stores: Sonar (trysonar.app). $29/month Indie, or API credits from $10 with no subscription; a hosted MCP server, CLI and REST API on every plan.
- Best free starting point: App Store Connect and Google Play Console, plus the store's own autocomplete.
The rule that matters more than any list: pick by the job, then check the price against what your apps earn.

What ASO tools do (and which ones to use)
ASO tools are software that helps you rank higher and convert better in the App Store and Google Play. They cover five jobs, and most tools are strong at one or two of them:
| Job | What the tool does | Strongest options |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword research | Search popularity, difficulty, keyword suggestions | AppTweak, Sonar, Appfigures, Astro (iOS) |
| Rank tracking | Keyword positions and history for your app | AppTweak, Sonar, Astro (iOS), App Radar |
| Competitor and market intelligence | Downloads, revenue, ads and keywords of rival apps | Sensor Tower, Appfigures (Explorer), AppTweak |
| Review monitoring | Rating and review tracking, replies, routing | AppFollow, Appfigures, ASOdesk |
| Store listing testing | A/B tests of icons, screenshots and listing text | Apple product page optimization and Google Play store listing experiments (both free, built in) |
If you are an indie developer, start with keyword research and rank tracking — they show whether your metadata changes are working. Free options exist for both (see our free ASO keyword tools roundup); if you want the data inside scripts or AI agents instead of a dashboard, compare ASO APIs by pricing and data.
How we evaluated
I've used or trialed each tool below, and we re-checked every plan, price and limit on the vendors' own pricing and documentation pages on October 19, 2026. Where a vendor publishes no price (Sensor Tower), we cite third-party purchase data and say so. Each tool was judged on:
- Keyword data — where popularity comes from, how difficulty is built, and how far below Apple's reporting floor the numbers go
- Rank tracking — how often positions are recorded, and whether tracking runs without your computer on
- Competitor and market data — keyword gaps, download and revenue estimates, ad intelligence
- Automation — REST API, CLI and MCP server, and what they cost on top of the plan
- Value at the entry plan — what the cheapest useful plan actually includes (apps, keywords, seats)
Best ASO tools by use case
Best for market intelligence: Sensor Tower
Sensor Tower is the largest mobile-intelligence vendor. It acquired Pathmatics in 2021 and data.ai (formerly App Annie) in March 2024 — so if you're searching for data.ai pricing, this is where you'll end up. The platform covers download and revenue estimates, ad intelligence, audience insights and keyword analytics.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Price | Not published — "we customize pricing plans for each customer". Vendr's purchase data (updated Feb 2026) shows a median of about $75,000/year across 40 purchases, ranging from roughly $29,500 to $115,000 |
| Free option | A free signup exists; what it includes isn't published |
| Keyword data | Proprietary estimates, difficulty, suggestions |
| Competitor data | Best in class: download and revenue estimates, ad intelligence across networks |
| API / MCP | API as a separate subscription; official MCP server (July 2026) for API subscribers |
| Best for | Publishers, ad agencies, analysts and investors who need market-wide data |
What it does well: its download and revenue estimates are the reference the press and analysts use, and its ad intelligence shows competitors' creatives across networks. If you need to size a category or estimate a competitor's revenue, nothing else on this list comes close.
Where it falls short for indies: every paid plan goes through sales, and the third-party contract data starts around $30,000 a year. ASO is one module among many.
Choose it if market sizing, revenue estimates or ad intelligence are your main job and the budget is there. Skip it if you need keyword research and rank tracking for your own apps — every other tool here does that for a fraction of the cost. More detail: Sonar vs Sensor Tower and our Sensor Tower pricing breakdown.
Best for keyword research depth on a team budget: AppTweak
AppTweak is the strongest dedicated ASO platform for teams past the hobbyist stage. Its keyword data, competitor analysis and reporting are mature, and it has grown a suite around them: Market Intelligence, an Apple Ads Campaign Manager and AI agents for ASO, reviews and reporting.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Price | Essential $79/month billed annually ($99 month-to-month); Grow $299; Expand $549 (EU list €79 / €249 / €499) |
| Free option | 7-day trial on each plan (billing details required) |
| Entry plan limits | 5 apps, 500 keywords, 1 seat, 100+ countries; keyword history 6 months |
| Competitor data | Strong: keyword overlap, visibility, Market Intelligence (free Starter, Explore from $658/month) |
| API / MCP | Separate API plans from $166/month; remote MCP server, data calls use API credits |
| Best for | ASO agencies and mid-market app teams |
What it does well: deep, well-presented keyword and competitor data; presentation-ready reports for agencies; a Campaign Manager that's free under $25,000 a month of Apple Ads spend; and a Reporting Agent included from the Essential plan.
Where it falls short for indies: every self-serve plan is single-seat, more apps cost more ($99/month on Essential for 10 apps), and API access is a second subscription. Keyword history is capped by plan at 6, 12 or 24 months.
Choose it if ASO is a team's main job and you want market intelligence and Apple Ads tools from the same vendor. Skip it if you mainly want cheap tracking for many apps. See Sonar vs AppTweak and our AppTweak alternatives guide.
Best for app analytics plus ASO: Appfigures
Appfigures started as an analytics dashboard for your own apps' sales, downloads and reviews, and added ASO on top. It's the most complete option if one tool should cover both your revenue dashboard and your keywords.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Price | Free plan; Connect $9.99/month; Monitor $44.99 (100 keywords); Optimize $149.99 (500 keywords, $119.99 billed annually); Boost $399.99; Amplify $1,399.99 |
| Free option | Free plan, plus a no-card trial that unlocks Optimize features |
| Seats | Up to 5 users on any plan |
| Competitor data | Keyword research and gaps; download and revenue estimates on the sales-led Explorer plans (from $599.99/month) |
| API / MCP | 1,000 API requests/day on every account; official CLI and hosted MCP server; data on other apps costs public-data credits |
| Best for | Developers who want sales analytics and ASO in one place |
What it does well: excellent dashboards for your own sales, downloads and reviews; five users at no extra cost; and an agent story that's genuinely good — a hosted MCP server that works in Claude and Cursor. In our October 2026 test its iOS popularity values matched Apple's own numbers, including Apple's floor of 5.
Where it falls short: keyword tracking starts at $44.99/month for 100 keywords, and the 500-keyword plan is $149.99/month — AppTweak territory. Market estimates sit on separate, sales-led plans.
Choose it if your daily dashboard is revenue and downloads. See Sonar vs Appfigures.
Best for review management: AppFollow
AppFollow is a review-management platform first: monitoring, AI-assisted replies, sentiment, and routing into the tools your support team already uses. Its ASO module covers keyword research and rank tracking.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Price | Free; ASO $19/month; Essential $179/month ($129 billed annually); Team $599/month ($425 billed annually); Enterprise custom |
| Free plan limits | 2 apps, 500 keywords, 500 API credits, 100 manual replies, Slack and Zendesk |
| Seats | Unlimited users on every plan |
| API / MCP | API credits by plan; hosted MCP server listed in Claude's connector directory |
| Best for | Support and marketing teams handling high review volume |
What it does well: review workflows at scale, with Slack and Zendesk integrations even on the free plan and Salesforce on Enterprise. The free plan and $19 ASO plan are among the cheapest ways to start tracking keywords for two apps.
Where it falls short: ASO is secondary to the review workflow, and the step from the $19 plan to Essential at $179/month is steep.
Choose it if reviews are your main lever. See Sonar vs AppFollow.
Best for publishing listings to both stores: App Radar
App Radar, part of SplitMetrics since 2023, pairs keyword research and rank tracking with a listing editor that pushes metadata live to App Store Connect and Google Play Console.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Price | Essentials €69/month (€58 billed annually; 2 apps, 500 keywords); Growth €169 (10 apps, 1,500 keywords); Scale €299 (15 apps, 3,000 keywords); Enterprise custom |
| Free option | 7-day trial, card required; no free plan |
| API | With Enterprise, or a €199/month add-on (read-only) |
| Best for | Teams and agencies that want research and publishing in one workflow |
What it does well: you research a keyword and ship the listing change from the same screen, across both stores, in 100+ countries on every plan.
Where it falls short: apps are capped tightly (2 on the entry plan), keyword history is limited by plan, and the API is an add-on.
Choose it if the copy-paste step between your ASO tool and the store consoles is what slows you down. See Sonar vs App Radar.
Best for iOS-only indies on a Mac: Astro
Astro is a native macOS app for iOS keyword research and rank tracking, with popularity from Apple Search Ads and an official local MCP server (beta).
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Price | $108/year (shown as $9/month, billed annually), single Mac license, 14-day refund window |
| Free option | Free version capped at 10 keywords |
| Coverage | App Store only, 60+ countries; no Google Play |
| Rank tracking | Daily — in our October 2026 test, only while the Mac app was open |
| API / MCP | No public API or CLI; local MCP server with 12 tools on the same Mac |
| Best for | Solo iOS developers who work on one Mac |
What it does well: it's the cheapest serious option, with unlimited keywords, a fast native UI and your data stored locally.
Where it falls short: no Google Play, no web or Windows access, and rank history has gaps when the app is closed.
Choose it if you ship only on iOS from one Mac. See Sonar vs Astro and our Astro alternatives guide.
Best for AI agents, APIs and both stores: Sonar
I built Sonar, so read this section with that in mind. I built it because the tools above didn't fit an indie developer with several apps who wanted agents to do the ASO work — including ReelMeal, a video-to-recipe app whose App Store title I re-anchored after Sonar showed the video keywords were the ones climbing.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Price | Indie $29/month or $290/year; Agency $149/month or $1,490/year; API credit packs from $10, no subscription |
| Free option | 7-day trial (card required, $0 today); 50 free API credits on signup; a keyless free API and MCP tier; no free dashboard plan |
| Indie limits | 10 apps, 2,500 keywords, 1,000 API requests/day, all countries; competitors never count against the caps |
| Keyword data | Apple's own Search Popularity where Apple reports it; Sonar's calibrated estimate below Apple's floor and for Google Play; difficulty with a visible breakdown |
| Rank tracking | Daily, on Sonar's servers; iOS ranks follow Apple's true search order |
| API / MCP / CLI | REST API, CLI and a hosted MCP server (80 tools) on every plan |
| Best for | Indie developers and small studios who want an agent — or a script — to do the ASO work across both stores |
What it does well: your agent in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or Claude can research keywords, compare competitors and track ranks through the hosted MCP server (https://trysonar.app/mcp, or npx -y @sonarapp/mcp@latest), with no API add-on to buy. Both stores sit in one plan. On October 19, 2026, Sonar put "budget planner" at iOS difficulty 63 with Apple popularity 51, and Google Play difficulty 63 with an estimated popularity of 42 — the kind of side-by-side an iOS-only tool can't show.
Where it falls short:
- No market data. No download panel, no category market sizing, no audience data; its revenue figures are rough per-app estimates. Ad Spy shows the Meta ads and TikTok posts of competitors you track, with no spend or impression data.
- Popularity below Apple's floor is Sonar's estimate. Apple reports 5 for most long-tail iOS searches, so Sonar's number there — and every Google Play popularity — is calibrated, not Apple's.
- It doesn't publish or test. Your agent drafts metadata for you to paste into App Store Connect or Play Console; there are no A/B tests and no Apple Ads campaign tools.
- Young and founder-led. Keyword history starts when Sonar began tracking a term (2026 at the earliest), and there are no account managers.
- Not the cheapest. Applyra ($9.99/month), Astro ($108/year) and AppFollow's $19 plan cost less if their limits fit you.
Choose it if you want agents or scripts on the data, ship on both stores, or track many apps on an indie budget. Pricing details are on the pricing page.
Free tools worth using first
Before paying for anything, use what's already free:
- App Store Connect and Google Play Console — your own impressions, conversion and search-term data. The most accurate source for your apps, and irreplaceable.
- Store autocomplete — type into the App Store or Google Play search bar; the suggestions are real queries.
- Google Trends — not app-store data, but useful for seasonality.
- An LLM — good for brainstorming keyword variations, useless for volume without real data behind it.
Our best free ASO tools guide covers every no-cost option, including free plans and free API tiers.
On the smallest budget: Applyra (applyra.io), an indie ASO tool, has a permanent free plan (1 app, 5 keywords, 1 competitor, 7 days of ranking history, both stores, no card) and one paid plan, Unlimited, at $9.99/month or $99.99/year. That's the cheapest paid plan we found with a REST API and an MCP server, and it lifts the app and keyword caps under a fair-use policy. The API allowance is 10,000 requests a month, where Appfigures and Sonar Indie allow 1,000 a day. These details come from its pricing page; we haven't put it through the same tests as the tools above.
ASO monitoring tools: rank tracking, alerts and competitor changes
ASO monitoring tools track your keyword rankings, alert you to competitor changes and surface visibility shifts before they affect downloads. App Store Connect shows your own impressions and conversions but not competitor movements or keyword-level rank history (Apple's App Store Connect Help), which is the gap dedicated monitoring tools fill.
Daily tracking is the baseline. A keyword that drops from position 3 to 12 overnight can cut its installs sharply, so alerts catch sudden drops while a weekly review catches gradual trends. Portfolios of five or more apps should also watch competitor metadata changes, which often trigger ranking shifts on related keywords within days.
| Tool | What it monitors best | Where alerts go |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor Tower | Market-wide movements, downloads, ads | Inside the platform (enterprise) |
| AppTweak | Keyword rankings, visibility, competitor keywords | In-app and email |
| Appfigures | Your own sales and reviews, plus keyword ranks | In-app and email |
| AppFollow | Reviews, ratings and sentiment | Slack, Zendesk, email |
| Astro | iOS keyword ranks on your Mac | In the Mac app |
| Sonar | Keyword ranks on both stores, competitor changes, reviews | Email, plus the API and MCP for your agent |
What to prioritize: if reviews are the main risk, AppFollow's routing into Slack and Zendesk is the deepest monitoring stack. For keyword rank monitoring, AppTweak and Sonar both track daily on their servers; Astro does it on your Mac while the app is open. Sensor Tower watches the whole market, at enterprise prices.
ASO optimization tools: metadata, testing and keyword suggestions
ASO optimization tools help you improve the listing itself: keyword suggestions, metadata editing and, in some cases, testing. Google Play has native store listing experiments and Apple offers product page optimization, which tests up to three alternate icons, screenshot sets and app previews against your original. Neither native tool tests keywords or titles — that's where before/after rank tracking comes in.
The loop is the same in every tool: research candidate keywords, update the metadata, and measure over two to four weeks. Tools that publish metadata directly — App Radar — remove the copy-paste step between your ASO tool and the store consoles. AI suggestions help with ideas but need real popularity data behind them; plenty of AI-generated keywords have no search volume at all.
| Tool | Keyword suggestions | Publishes metadata to the stores | AI features |
|---|---|---|---|
| AppTweak | Yes | No | AI agents (Reporting Agent from Essential, ASO Agent on Enterprise) |
| App Radar | Yes | Yes (listing editor pushes live) | — |
| Appfigures | Yes | No | Hosted MCP server for your own agent |
| AppFollow | Yes | No | AI-assisted review replies |
| Astro | Yes (from other Astro users' keywords) | No | Local MCP server |
| Sonar | Yes (AI-generated, checked against store autocomplete and real popularity) | No — drafts only | Hosted MCP server, AI keyword discovery, Listing Helper drafts |
Whichever tool you use, the process is the same — our metadata optimization guide walks through it from keyword selection to submission.
ASO tracking: keywords, downloads and reviews
ASO tracking covers three dimensions: keyword ranks (where your app appears for a term), downloads (how installs trend) and reviews (sentiment and rating changes). For most indie developers keyword ranks are the highest-leverage one, because they show directly whether a metadata change worked.
Keyword rank tracking. Every paid tool here records ranks daily, but limits differ: AppTweak's plans cap at 500, 1,500 and 3,000 keywords; Sonar's Indie plan covers 2,500 (10,000 on Agency); App Radar's plans cap at 500 to 3,000; Astro has no cap. For a one-off check, Sonar's free app rank tracker queries the store live without an account.
Download and revenue tracking. Apple and Google don't publish download numbers, so competitor downloads are always estimates. Sensor Tower's estimates are the industry reference; Appfigures' Explorer plans offer them too. Sonar has no download estimates for other apps — its revenue figures are rough per-app estimates.
Review tracking. AppFollow is strongest here, with Slack and Zendesk routing. Appfigures and ASOdesk also monitor and reply. Sonar drafts and posts replies only for your own iOS apps, through App Store Connect.
| Tracking dimension | Best tool | Also good |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword ranks | AppTweak (data depth), Sonar (both stores, value) | Astro (iOS on a Mac), App Radar |
| Download estimates | Sensor Tower | Appfigures (Explorer) |
| Review monitoring | AppFollow | Appfigures, ASOdesk |

Each linked tool name goes to a side-by-side comparison with Sonar, and every one of those pages has a section on when to choose that tool instead. The full set, including ASOdesk, Mobile Action, ASOMobile and FoxData, lives on the comparisons hub.
Which tool fits which developer?
Three variables decide it: what your apps earn, how many apps you manage, and whether you want the data in an agent or script.
| Developer profile | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo iOS developer on a Mac | Astro ($108/year) | Unlimited keywords, cheapest serious option |
| Indie with apps on both stores, or using AI agents | Sonar ($29/month) | 10 apps and 2,500 keywords, MCP/CLI/API included |
| Two apps, tight budget, review-heavy | AppFollow (free or $19/month) | Free plan with 500 keywords and review routing |
| Team that wants research and publishing in one place | App Radar (€69/month) | Listing editor pushes to both stores |
| Growing studio, ASO is a core job | AppTweak (from $79/month) | Deep keyword data, reporting, Apple Ads tools |
| Analytics-first workflow | Appfigures (free; ASO from $44.99/month) | Sales dashboards with ASO on top, 5 users |
| Publisher, VC or analyst | Sensor Tower (custom quote) | Download, revenue and ad intelligence |
A common mistake is over-buying: a developer earning $300/month from apps doesn't need a $79/month tool, whatever its data quality. Keeping the tool at roughly 5–10% of app revenue is a sensible ceiling. For what ASO work involves step by step, see our guide to what ASO is.
Frequently asked questions
Q: What are ASO tools, and which one should I use?
A: ASO tools help you rank and convert better in the App Store and Google Play through keyword research, rank tracking, competitor intelligence, review monitoring and listing tests. Pick by job: Sensor Tower (custom quote) for market intelligence, AppTweak (from $79/month billed annually) for keyword depth, Appfigures for analytics plus ASO, AppFollow for reviews, App Radar (from €69/month) for publishing listings, Astro ($108/year) for iOS on a Mac, and Sonar ($29/month, or API credits from $10) for AI-agent workflows across both stores. For listing A/B tests, Apple and Google both have free native tools.
Q: What are the best tools for ASO if I'm on a tight budget?
A: Under $50/month the realistic field is Applyra (free for 1 app and 5 keywords, or $9.99/month for unlimited under fair use, both stores), Astro ($108/year, iOS only), AppFollow (free plan or $19/month for 2 apps), Sonar ($29/month for 10 apps on both stores) and Appfigures (free plan; keyword tracking from $44.99/month). If you want no cost at all, start with App Store Connect, Google Play Console and our free ASO tools guide.
Q: Do I need a paid ASO tool, or are free tools enough?
A: Free sources — App Store Connect, Google Play Console and manual autocomplete research — cover the basics of keyword research. A paid tool adds competitor keywords, automated rank tracking and history that free sources don't provide. First-party analytics show your own impressions and conversions, not competitor keywords or search popularity.
Q: How is ASO tooling different from SEO tooling?
A: ASO tools pull data from the App Store and Google Play indexes, which are separate from the web indexes SEO tools crawl. The metrics (Apple's Search Popularity, install counts on Google Play) and the metadata fields (subtitle, keyword field, short description) are store-specific. See our ASO vs SEO breakdown.
Q: What are the top ASO monitoring tools for tracking keyword rankings?
A: For keyword ranks, AppTweak and Sonar both track daily on their servers — AppTweak with deeper reporting, Sonar on both stores at a lower price with API and MCP access. Astro tracks iOS ranks on your Mac while its app is open. If review sentiment matters as much as ranks, AppFollow's Slack and Zendesk routing is the strongest monitoring stack. Sensor Tower monitors the whole market but needs a sales contract.
Q: What are the top ASO tools for indie developers in 2026?
A: It depends on platform and workflow. iOS-only on a Mac: Astro ($108/year). Both stores or agent workflows: Sonar ($29/month). Two apps and review-heavy: AppFollow (free or $19/month). Analytics first: Appfigures. AppTweak (from $79/month billed annually) makes sense once ASO is a team's main job.
Q: Which ASO tool has the best API and MCP server for automation?
A: Several are good now. Appfigures gives every account 1,000 API requests a day plus an official CLI and hosted MCP server, though data on other apps costs credits. AppTweak's remote MCP server rides on API plans from $166/month. Sonar includes a REST API (1,000 requests/day on Indie, or prepaid credits from $10), a CLI and a hosted MCP server with 80 tools on every plan, with a keyless free tier for trying it. Sensor Tower, AppFollow and Mobile Action also ship official MCP servers. Our ASO MCP server comparison goes through each one.
Final thoughts
The best ASO tool is the one you'll actually use every week. A tool you check daily beats an expensive one you open once a quarter. Start with the free sources, work out which data you're missing, and pay for the tool that fills that gap — not before.
Keyword research and rank tracking compound over time. Explore real competitive data in our keyword difficulty pages for terms like time tracker or invoice maker. The developers who win at ASO update their metadata regularly, track their rankings and test keyword changes systematically — any tool on this list can support that.
